Guitar and percussion recorded summer 2015. The tape was forgotten and then stumbled upon in late 2018. Lyrics were written in February 2019, and vocals and bass were recorded in March 2019.

WESTERN MUSIC combines Western, Cowpunk, Rockabilly, Tribal, and Grunge music with a minimalist approach. The album reflects and seeks to both reconcile and pay tribute to realistic and western movie depictions of life in the Wild West. An appreciation of nature in relation to people runs throughout the work.

MAGAZINE – An Album by Lance Blitz

The core of the music for the MAGAZINE album was recorded on cassette in summer 2007. Those raw recordings were unearthed and completed with lyrics/vocals in late 2018 and early 2019, resulting in this lo-fi punk rock masterpiece.

Recommended for fans of early Damned, early Misfits, early Vandals, and The Germs.

(NOTE: The gun imagery on the album cover is in support of the 1st and 2nd Amendment Rights, is a reference to the title track “Magazine” (and its double-entendre referring to weaponized media strategies/tactics and the need for the people to defend against it and to have their own media while boycotting theirs). It is also used to point out the ridiculousness of people’s very reactions that “triggers” them. That it has “MAGA” in the word is a happy coincidence that makes it even better. Additionally, the first Vandals EP and The Damned’s Machine Gun Etiquette were influential for this album. It is a near perfect album cover… Don’t you agree? This is the ATTITUDE we all need to have when confronted in our daily lives with the PC media and its effects on our culture. Stand your ground nonviolently.)

We’ll have more on the songs here very soon! This one goes several steps further beyond the funk-rock of 2015’s ‘Positivity’ – The album showcases versatility with a current take on a mix of 80s/90s-influenced alternative rock styles, straddling different genres throughout and incorporating elements of funk, metal, western, new wave, electronica, and pop. It’s still hardcore punk at its core, but this particular album has no thrashers… That’s not to say there won’t be more soon… 😉

This is the album I had to do right now, and I am very happy with it. I hope you enjoy it.

“Positivity” Album Intro & Track by Track Commentary

Positivity Cover v1 - OCR std
Hey, I am super excited to announce the release of my new album, “Positivity”, which is very funk-rock driven, with lots of punk rock and alternative rock influences … and lots of rad guitar solos. I will state up front that the album is heavily influenced by music from many eras of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The vocals are all over the place. Likely vocal influences I think I have identified this time around include Anthony Kiedis, Henry Rollins, HR, Glenn Danzig, Jello Biafra, Gibby Haynes, Darby Crash, and Billy Corgan. I guess those are pretty high-profile names…

It’s a good mix of mostly upbeat, fun music that will make you want to rock out, dance, and listen. The lyrics poetically deal with serious subjects in a thoughtful and grounded way without weighing down the songs. This album is meant to be a PMA (Positive Mental Attitude – which has deep roots in hardcore punk and elsewhere) experience, which will make you think and feel good.

This album is a bit different from the hardcore punk you may have expected. On future albums, I intend to expand further into the funk, pop, and rock genres, in addition to hardcore, punk, thrash, and metal. I will take a moment to introduce and describe each of the eleven songs on the album (scroll down to hear it!):

POSITIVITY
As soon as I came up with the opening/main riff, I was pretty sure this would be the first song on the album, and it also sounded like the most clear example of the tone I wanted to set for the rest of the record. I also thought it would be good to have the weird chorus vocals on the first song, so the listener would know they shouldn’t expect to know what to expect…

PREPOSTEROUS
To me, this has RHCP all over it. It has a simple funk-punk riff in the verse, and then a chorus with cool twin lead guitars over funk vox. I like this one more all the time.

PUBLIC INTOXICAN’T
Building on the sound of the previous song, this is the third of the three opening fast songs that begin with the letter “p”… It may have a little bit of The Dead Milkmen in its style, and it has some pretty intense “soul music” vocals

CROWD SORES
You can sit back a bit on this one. Mid-paced. Funky pop-rock. Like most of the solos, this one was improvised without a plan, and it is a single take… Lots of puns in the lyrics on this one…

YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG
I think it has kind of an Alice in Chains sound, though it was originally intended as a reggae-dub song…
* End of Side 1 *

IN THE CITY
* Start of Side 2 *
As noted, the first song on side 2 when it is put on vinyl or cassette… Very funk-rock, with at least 3 vocal styles. The bass is pretty strong on this one, especially at the end of the bridge.

LIFE AS A GHOST
When I finished recording the improvised lead guitar on this one, that’s when I knew this had to be a good record. That’s when I really got excited. This song’s lyrics compare having to keep your mouth shut about all the B.S. around you to how ghosts supposedly are always dwelling on important and unfinished things from their lives. I thought it seemed like a cool, poetic idea, so I made it. Oh yeah, it’s a really mellow song…

MODEL CITIZEN
Now that you’re all rested up, you get hit with what is probably the hardest rocker on the album. It is also a sort of tribute to The Germs, which you may be able to hear in the vocal style used.

LITMUS
It is a nice transition into this song, which is the second “chill” song on the record. The metaphor works pretty well throughout the song.

THE CAUSE-HEADS
Have you seen PCU? If not, you need to! This song was born from the frustration of seeing these people who express their feelings of desperation to stand for something by standing for anything they are told is good, particularly when they cannot and refuse to see that the people directing them are bad… Much like the PCU film, the song has a hopeful and positive vibe to it… I love that driving chorus beat…

OVER THE HORIZON
Okay, this actually kind of sounds like an upbeat Cure song. Let’s hear it for poppy distorted bass! The lyrics tell the listener to focus his vision, to recognize and find strength in the fact that those around him have made similar mistakes, and to have the courage to do what’s right – with a positive attitude. The song is on the cool, mellow side, but it has a driving aspect to it. I think the song and album finish strongly.

You could loop it right back to the first song and listen to the whole album again. I do think that despite the diversity of sounds explored, it sounds like a single, complete album. I also believe I succeeded in tackling somewhat serious topics in an upbeat and artful manner while promoting a positive and upbeat perspective, which is the theme and what I set out to do. Thank you for reading/listening, and I would like to hear what you like about the album.

Disfunction opened for DOYLE of THE MISFITS – AGAIN! – June 2017

DISFUNCTION www.horrorpunksin21.com opened for DOYLE of THE MISFITS for the second time in June 2017. Check out the video below.

We tore it up as usual. Thanks to Imani, and thanks to everyone who made it such a fun night. The venue (The Haven in Orlando, FL) was PACKED. Great time, and DOYLE was great too. He played lots of leads, using lots of pedals. That’s a big change. They played no Misfits songs this time, unlike the last time DISFUNCTION opened for them on Black Friday of 2015… That was a bummer, as I think everyone there expected Misfits songs. Perhaps since he is playing with Glenn and THE MISFITS again, his DOYLE project will be only DOYLE songs – or as long as the classic lineup regrouping lasts…

This was one of those special nights. Check out the part at the beginning of “Til Death” in the video where the tuner pedal fails, and I pull the cord out and go direct to the amp for a louder guitar tone, just in time…

Downtown Sanford DISFUNCTION show as part of the DECADE OF DISFUNCTION celebration series

Sanford’s own DISFUNCTION (horrorpunks in 21) will be playing on Saturday, April 1st at Rabbitfoot Records, a Record Store that is also a Bar/Cafe/Venue in Downtown Sanford, Florida. Actually, this show is the opening night of the PUNK ROCK SATURDAYS series, which will be featuring punk rock shows every Saturday in Downtown Sanford! We are excited to be a part of that, and we are also excited to play this hometown show in celebration of A DECADE OF DISFUNCTION: TEN YEARS OF THRASH AND HORROR!

Many other bands, including Pizza Nightmare, Clem McGillicutty & the Burnouts, and 1/2 of Gnarly Whales will also be playing…

Yes, Disfunction’s first live show was 10 years ago, in April of 2007. Disfunction was a skateboarding team prior to that, but had picked up instruments and had begin playing some rudimentary hardcore punk songs before filling out their lineup and playing live. (I joined the band on guitar about 2.75 years in, so I have been involved for over 7 years) DISFUNCTION has gone on to play some exciting shows with the likes of The Misfits, DRI, Doyle, Michale Graves, Barb Wire Dolls, Blitzkid, Darrow Chemical Company, One-Way System, Total Chaos, and many more!

DISFUNCTION thanks everyone for ten years of support, and we are excited about new recording projects on the horizon.

Disfunction/Dix SPLIT to be released on Cassette!

I am excited to announce that the long-awaited 6-track SPLIT EP featuring 3 songs from The Filthy Dix and 3 songs from Disfunction will be released shortly through the Necro21 label ON CASSETTE! (Vinyl, CD, & Digital may follow) … I engineered all 6 songs on the EP.

The cover art, featuring a “split” skateboard has been designed (see snapshot above). A fun fact of this release is that both bands contain members of the original DISFUNCTION SKATEBOARDING TEAM (Josh, Seth, and Dave) that evolved into the horror-punk/thrash band we have today.

I play guitar and perform some backup vocals on the Disfunction tracks of the SPLIT, and I also wrote the song, “Road Warrior” and co-wrote the instrumental “Influx I” with Disfunction’s previous drummer, Tiffany. Our new drumer, Jon, has a take on the song that is reminiscent of the slower side of crossover-style DRI, which fits Disfunction like a glove. A new version of “Necro-Viral Frenzy” is also included. Jon, who has played drums with Disfunction for nearly 2 years, also played guitar on the Filthy Dix tracks. (In fact, he came to be our drummer following his guitar recording sessions for this split about 2 years ago!) Disfunction’s tracks here have a raw, gritty, and direct hardcore punk/thrash sound, closer to the 2016 ‘More Than Meets The Eye’/’Paranoid’ single than the ‘Horrorpunks in 21’ ep in tone, but harder-hitting. I am especially excited to see the release of this new recording of ‘Road Warrior’, which closes the split.

On the Filthy Dix side of the SPLIT, I am happy to report that the recordings capture their energy and spirit along with the best performances I have ever heard from them. Drummer Dave did a great job laying down the drums, which were captured on a Roland machine by Seth and Josh of Disfunction alongside a BBQ party. Subsequent sessions with Jamie (bass) and Jon (guitar) were filled with exuberance, and I was impressed with Jon’s application of “Greg Ginn” buzzsaw rhythm and somewhat improvised lead parts. The Split EP starts off on the Dix side with “You Can’t Kickflip” – a fan favorite and a fitting beginning for this skater-oriented release. The building and cathartic “Show The Boss” contains some funny one-liners and mob-style vocals from everyone involved in the making of this Split. The surf-style instrumental that follows begins with an off-mic guitar riff and closes out the Dix’s side with a showing of the fun and throwback “drunk punk” nature that really marks their performances and differentiates them in the Orlando/Sanford, FL punk rock scene… Flip the tape over, and you hear the the opening sounds of Disfunction’s “Influx”…

After many performances together, two of Sanford’s favorite local hardcore/punk bands are finally publicly releasing their Split EP to commemorate the creativity and fun times we’ve had together at DIY punk rock shows over the past few years. I am very happy to have helped to put it together.

Lance Blitz song from the POSITIVITY album: “LITMUS”

From the 2015 LANCE BLITZ album, ‘POSITIVITY’ … Listen to and read: “LITMUS” … This is one of the “mellower” songs on the album…

throw your inner child down in a well – you’re the “damn” in the levee – we’ll wait for the swell – watch the streets washed clean again – rise with the tide – you sink or swim in the end – get your feet wet to begin to begin – to have a clean palate, got to taste the sin – poison apples offered from the witches’ brew – choosing sides – the seams show – a point of view – criticize, expertize, which way to go – ya need to know someone who knows, ya know
